BTU Scores Victory for OT and PT Professionals
I'm pleased to announce that BTU, in cooperation with AFT-Maryland, the Maryland State Teachers Association, and the National Education Association, has scored an impressive victory for Occupational and Physical Therapists, our fellow members of teacher bargaining units!
The Maryland State Board of Education proposed the repeal of the regulation that requires Occupational and Physical Therapists to be fully licensed as teachers. That proposed change would have cost these professionals the right to collective bargaining, tenure rights, and the due process protections provided under existing law.
BTU joined with other organizations to oppose this change, voicing its opposition to the Maryland State Board of Education's Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board. In just a few weeks, more than 2,000 e-mails, letters, and other forms of correspondence flooded the Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board, stating opposition to the proposal.
In the face of opposition by BTU and other Unions, the Professional Standards and Teacher Education Board, on July 7, 2008, voted to withdraw the proposal.
Our actions on behalf of Occupational and Physical Therapists, members of teaching bargaining units, demonstrate what Unions can do.
We're proud to have lent our support to this effort!
